Studio Tax

Free Canadian Income Tax Software

It's getting to that time where we need to file income tax. Last year, I did a search and came across this FREE software from a company called BHOK IT Consulting. The software is called StudioTax. And it is absolutely free for personal use. No additional forms or modules are required if you have income or deductions like investments or a small business. As I said, last year I used it and got a sizable refund.

StudioTax is a windows bilingual personal Income Tax preparation software made by Canadians for Canadians. StudioTax is distributed using a free licensing model. No license key or registration is required to download, install and use StudioTax. After you use StudioTax and you find it useful, please take the time to make a modest monetary contribution toward the support of this product.

StudioTax is made available for individuals who prepare their own tax returns, or returns for a small number of relatives and friends only. Please note that tax professional cannot use NETFILE to file tax returns on behalf of their clients. They must use EFILE certified software. You may only use the NETFILE service to file a tax return in your name using your own access code. If you have prepared someone else's return and want to file using NETFILE, you must have that person enter his or her access code and personally click the submit button for that return using the NETFILE service.

Note that StudioTax may not handle some uncommon tax situations.

More than 170,000 taxpayers used StudioTax 2008 to file their 2008 returns!!

Currently only the pre-certified version is available for 2009 taxes.

What is the pre-certified version ?
You can use the pre-certified version to prepare and save your return. You will need to download and install the certified version in order to Netfile or print the saved return. You do not need to re-enter your tax information once the certified version becomes available.

When the certified version will be available ?
We do not know. It depends on CRA certification process. For the past five years, StudioTax was certified a couple of days before or after the start of filing season(mid February).

As always, StudioTax is made available FREE for personal use and regardless of level of income. Even if you make millions of dollars, you still can use StudioTax for free. NO questions to answer, NO registrations, NO keys, and NO activation.

Q. How about if I need more returns?
A. More than 20 returns? Sorry can’t do, see CRA requirement. If you are a tax preparer, then get an unlimited number of returns by using Studiotax Enterprise.

Q. Can I import my 2008 return created by another tax program?
A. Unfortunately you have to do that manually. Only StudioTax 2008 returns can be imported by StudioTax 2009.

Note: Quebec provincial tax is not supported by Studiotax 2009. if you are a Quebec resident, then you can only prepare and netfile/print your Federal tax .
